Zhishan Li Residence

The residence is the top-unit apartment in a 40-year-old walk-up building. On the rooftop, right above the unit, exists a small additional space. The objective is to use the stairwell to combine the two floors and create the lightwell, then utilize the rooftop terrace as an urban oasis.

The upper level consists of the kitchen, dining, and the open garden. By leveling the inside and outside finish floor and creating two large full-height windows, the interior space and the garden greatly connect to each other. The kitchen is accented with Calacatta violet stone countertop and dark wood cabinetry. A few modern and colorful chandeliers at the dining table and stairwell complement the space.

The lower level is the bedrooms, the study, and the living den. Three bedrooms and the master bathroom form a group, embraced by a looped circulation. This introduces opportunities to foster unexpected interaction for the family. By grouping bedrooms together at one side of the floor plate, it yields a very spacious public area where the study and the living room are located. With the sunlight coming through from the large south-facing window and the lightwell, the living room and the study are bright and airy throughout the day.

Given the space is materialized with Wenge wood on the floor and cabinetry, and white paint and plaster on the walls and ceilings, it performs a clear contrast in style and brings out the quiet profuseness.
